When AC Replacement Makes More Sense Than Another Repair

A fix only makes sense until you are looking to put down half the cost of a new one. Then there is the age of the unit and what kind of refrigerant it uses. The following are telltale signs you need an AC replacement in New Jersey rather than another repair.

Your AC Is 10–15+ Years Old

In this climate, a central air conditioner lasts about 12 to 15 years. After that, efficiency takes a nosedive and parts don't last as long. If a system over 12 needs a major overhaul, you are better off with a new one.

Repairs Keep Getting More Expensive

If you have made three service calls in as many summers, that is a pattern, not bad luck. An aging compressor or corroded coil will go and then something else will follow. Tally up the repair bills from the last couple of years and compare them to the price of a new system.

Some Rooms Stay Hot No Matter What

You may find the second floor or the west side of the house staying hot. That is often because the unit can no longer keep pace with the home; compressors lose their capacity with age. A properly sized replacement will put an end to those hot spots.

Your Energy Bills Keep Rising

If your habits haven't changed but the summer bill has, the system is likely straining to do its job. Worn components and poor efficiency add to the cost every season. With a high-efficiency model, you can trim those costs, and some even put you in line for PSE&G rebates.

The System Uses Outdated Refrigerant or Hard-to-Find Parts

Any system from before 2010 is probably running on R-22, which isn't made in the U.S. anymore. A leak becomes very pricey to fix. If you are in need of R-22 or a part that has been discontinued, a new system is the way to go.

Repair or Replace Your Air Conditioner? Here's the Honest Math

Take the repair quote and run it against the age of your unit. If you are talking $5,000 or more, replacement is the smarter move. A big repair on a 14-year-old doesn’t buy you much.

When a Repair Still Makes Sense

If the system is under 8 and it is a single part that has given out, it is worth fixing; our repair crew can usually have you cool again the same day.

When Replacement Pays Off

Once a unit is over 10 and the repair is north of $1,500, the numbers speak for themselves. You save money in the long run with a new, efficient model. You will see coastal homes come to this point in their lifecycle a little quicker; the salt air is hard on outdoor coils and they corrode at a faster clip than you would find with an inland unit.

What Happens During an AC Replacement Visit

A typical central AC replacement is a one-day job. There are four steps to it, and we make sure to take you along for each one.

Check the Existing System and Cooling Problems

First, we check the existing system for any cooling issues. This means looking over the unit, the ducts and the electrical to see what has given out and what the new equipment will have to contend with. In some of the older properties in Union or Essex counties, we will put a flag on undersized ducts or old wiring before we even put a quote in front of you.

Size the New AC Around Your Home, Not Guesswork

Then we get to sizing the new AC. We don't do that by guesswork but with a proper Manual J load calculation. We factor in the square footage, insulation, how many windows you have and the way the house is oriented. You don't want an oversized unit that short-cycles and wastes power, nor one too small to do its job.

Review Ductwork, Airflow and Electrical Requirements

The new equipment is only as good as the circuits and ducts behind it. So we review your airflow and electrical requirements. We'll test static pressure and seal up any leaks, and if the ducts need attention, you will be told right then and there, not after we have finished the install.

Install, Test and Walk You Through the New System

When we are done setting up and installing the new AC, we verify the refrigerant charge and run the numbers on temperature split and airflow. We'll show you the ropes on the thermostat and the maintenance needed to hold your warranty. Then we pack up the old unit and leave the place in order.

FAQs

For most central air conditioning replacement projects in the state, you are looking at $6,000 to $12,000 installed. It comes down to the size and efficiency of the system and the state of your ducts. A high-efficiency model will set you back more to begin with, but PSE&G rebates can make up for it.
Do the math on the age and the cost of the fix. If you are over $5,000, it is time for a new one. An 8-year-old with a bad part is worth mending; a 12-year-old that needs a major overhaul usually isn’t. We will lay out both options for you.
Most AC replacement NJ projects are wrapped up in a day. A simple central swap is 6 to 8 hours. If we have to add some duct or electrical work, it may go into a second day. We’ll let you know the timeline ahead of time.
We measure in tons of cooling via a Manual J. As a rule of thumb in New Jersey, it is about a ton for every 500-600 sq. ft., but sun exposure and ceiling height can change that. Don’t think bigger is better; an oversized unit cools unevenly and doesn’t last.
New Jersey municipalities require a permit for AC replacement, plus an inspection when you are done. Platinum HVAC takes care of pulling the permit and the inspection, so you don’t have to make a trip to town hall.
With a new high-efficiency system, you should see a difference compared to an old unit running on fumes. The SEER2 ratings on today’s models are nothing like the older stuff. Most of our customers notice it on the first full summer bill.
